Photoshop Tutorials

Summary

My first project as a sophomore in Graphic Design was to follow along with some Photoshop tutorials and eventually edit my own creation. I learned a lot through this process, especially since I hardly knew anything about Photoshop before starting with the tutorials. First, I learned about content aware fill and used it to remove unwanted details from the background of images. Then I learned about the patch tool and used it to remove a logo from a man's shirt. Next, the videos taught me about the clone stamp and the healing brush. I used those to remove a tag from a woman's coat. After that, I learned how to use the patch tool with the clone stamp and used those to remove more background details. The spot healing brush, which was next, was used to remove small blemishes from a boy's face. The last tutorial was about building a portrait collage and combined most of the skills I had learned in previous tutorials. The last project was a challenge where I was supposed to use creativity and the skills that I learned to create something with a portrait of a man and some pictures of nature.

Important Tools

Three of the most important tools I learned about are content aware fill, the clone stamp, and the spot healing brush. All of these are fairly easy to use but can also be extremely effective. I know that I will be using them a lot for those reasons. My favorite tool has to be the clone stamp because it is extremely easy to use but also has a very wide range of possible uses.

Strengths and Weaknesses

I have never been very good with technology, and Photoshop definitely wasn't any different. I was really good at following the basic steps that I was told to do, but once skill and creativity got involved, I crashed. I took a lot of time and tried to do my very best on all of the photos, but most of them still ended up with imperfections. However, knowing my personal skill level and what I thought I would be able to do, I am overall pretty pleased with my work. I know I did the best I could, even though it's not perfect.

Next Time


If I could do this project again, I would like to spend even more time making my products as flawless as possible. I still notice some blemishes that I wish I could have fixed. I am happy with the concept that I came up with for the final challenge, but I wish I had a little more time to fix imperfections and experiment with my creativity a little more.

Thoughts

I feel like I did learn a lot from these tutorials, but I wish I had a little more time overall to try to understand the concepts a little bit better. I feel like I'm already beginning to forget some of what I learned from these videos, but hopefully the information will come back to me while I am working on other future projects.

Videos I watched a few videos to start learning about typography. Although they weren't always the most exciting, I did learn a lot that I didn't even realize I needed to know. I learned about how critical fonts can be in getting a message across and how they are often the first impression that a consumer gets of a product. ONW Procedure Video

My first video project of my sophomore year was creating a video that showed how to go through a basic procedure at ONW. My group decided to show how to get a pass and go to the restroom. Initially, we were going to show what not to do as well as what you should do, but I decided to cut that out of my edit in order to make the video shorter. We had to start the process with coming up with a concept for the video. Luckily, we came up with the idea of getting a pass and going to the restroom fairly quickly. Once we did that, I wrote the script and the other group members created the storyboard. We were supposed to start filming the next day, but we got faulty equipment so we couldn't start until the next day. As far as our cast list, we just used the people in our group as actors in the video so that we wouldn't have to disturb any other groups or classes. My 10 Strengths Animation

Process For this project we had to come up with ten strengths that we possess. The ten that I came up with are  writing, honesty, loyalty, logical, intellectual, creative, patient, helpful, supportive, and humorous. I had to ask some friends to help me come up with some of them, which was very helpful. After we came up with these strengths, we had to find a photo to use as a background for our animation. I chose a large, old library because I love books and antiques. We then had to arrange our words on the background using different layers. In order to make them look pleasing, we had to experiment with fonts, sizes, and colors. Finally, we got to the animation part. unlike the last few times, we used the video option in photoshop to animate this particular project.
