Short Film
(Video hopefully to come soon)
The title of my short film is "Extracurriculars." This film is about two friends who are sick and tired of school and simply need a break from their responsibilities. In order to escape their after school activities for a while, they decide to take advantage of their nearly empty school. The tagline for this film would be "Just a short break."
First, we had to do pre-production. This included writing film treatments, scripts, making story boards, and finding actors. This was the first time any of us had done film treatments or scripts, and we were very confused. The whole writing process took way longer than it should have because we had no idea what we were supposed to be doing or how to write a film treatment or script. One everyone wrote individuals film treatments and scripts, we got into groups and decided which one to make into a short film. My group originally chose Tim's idea called "Boy." However, we eventually decided to do my idea instead because it would be a lot easier and take a lot less time. We had a ridiculously limited amount of time so we didn't have a lot of room for good creativity.
We finally started filming on Friday during class and finished Friday after school, since that was the only time enough people were available. However, we still couldn't find enough actors so we just used one person from our group and one of her friends. Also, nobody in my group would do any work, so Emma and I pretty much did the entire thing by ourselves.
When we finally got done filming, we had to start postproduction-editing. When we were filming, we didn't have an SD card, so we just had to use my camera. This became an issue when we started to edit because I couldn't figure out how to get the footage onto the computer. In the end, however, I was able to get it to work and all was well. The project was already late at this point, so we hurried as fast as we could to get it turned in.
The main thing I learned during this project was time management. My group did nothing the first few days and that definitely came back to bite us later on. However, we also weren't given nearly enough time to actually create a decent project. Another thing I learned was that you can't rely on anyone else and you should just do everything by yourself.
If I were to do this project again, I wouldn't do anything the same. I would do this whole project completely differently if I could. First of all, I would just do the whole thing by myself from the beginning because the people in my group refused to do anything or put in any effort. Next, I would write a better script and take more time to make that script into a decent short film. Finally, I would make sure that I actually had an SD card so that I wouldn't have to use my own camera.
I will be sure to take what I learned about time management into my next project. I will make sure that I give myself plenty of time to do what needs to be done and not procrastinate.
As this is my final Exploring Video blog post, I just want to say that I am so happy it's over. Although I may have learned a few things this year, it was not worth the pain and stress that this class has caused me. I cannot remember one good experience I had in video class or one especially helpful thing I learned. I am so excited to finally move on to what I actually care about, journalism.
